The Mozy iOS app now supports data decryption for customers using personal key encryption. Android update due within weeks.
Since its initial release in March this year, the Mozy app for iOS (iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch devices) has quickly become a favorite feature for Mozy customers. With the app you can access any file you have backed up to Mozy right from your mobile device. Complete with photo previews, document viewing, and the ability to open files in other applications or send them via email, the app makes Mozy more than just a way to protect against data loss. Along with similar access through any browser, the app provides a way to access all your personal and professional files from anywhere.
Here’s a quick retrospective of the progress of our iOS app so far:

Today, we released version 1.2, now available at no charge from the App Store. Aside from several performance enhancements and bug fixes, this version delivers a feature that many (often quite vocal) customers have been awaiting: personal key data decryption.
About Personal Key Data Decryption
To protect customer privacy, Mozy online backup always encrypts the data for each file before sending it to Mozy. About 95% of our customers opt for Mozy’s default encryption. The remaining 5% opt to employ a personal key for encrypting their backups. When you encrypt with a personal key, it ensures that the only person who can readily decrypt your files is you. Of course, this also means that Mozy has no way to decrypt your data if you forget your personal key.
Data Decryption Comes to the iOS App
Until today, customers who opted to use personal key encryption could not access the content of their files through the app. The app was incapable of decrypting downloaded files.
With this latest release, you can set the personal key used for backup on each of your computers (even if each uses a different key). The mobile app can then download any file, use the key to decrypt its content, and then allow you to use the file as you need. You can view it, email it, or even open it in another app.
Mobile & the Trade-offs of Using a Personal Key
There are certain services that Mozy performs online to support the Mozy app. For example, the file names used by digital cameras make it hard to know what’s in a photo, so the Mozy app displays photo thumbnails.
When you view a folder containing photos, an online service generates a thumbnail for each photo, allowing the app to download a small image instead of whole photos, saving time and bandwidth.
However, if your photos are encrypted with a personal key, then Mozy can only provide a generic thumbnail indicating that Mozy cannot read the photo.
But you can still download the whole photo and–once downloaded and decrypted by the mobile app–you can view it on your device.

“I am a doctoral student. I was writing my comprehensive exams; the major exams I had to take before being allowed to write my dissertation. We are excited to announce the arrival of our Mozy Data Shuttle™ service for MozyPro® customers in the U.S.
With today’s upload bandwidth speeds, the initial backup for large data sets can take weeks, and sometimes even months. Mozy Data Shuttle is a delivery vehicle designed specifically to solve this problem and will enable businesses to quickly, easily, and securely back up their data to a Mozy data center within days, making this a great solution for anyone with 100 GB of data or more to back up.
How does it work? Mozy ships a Data Shuttle drive (or drives) to you overnight. When the drive arrives, simply plug the Mozy Data Shuttle device into your server and allow the MozyPro client to transfer the data to the device. During the transfer, the Mozy client will encrypt your data twice: once with the default Mozy key or your personal key, and then again with a unique/one-time use key. Once your data is safely loaded on the Data Shuttle, return it to Mozy with the provided overnight shipping label. As always, we then store your data encrypted at rest. Your server’s incremental backups can begin even before you return the drive to Mozy!

We are excited to announce that the Mozy iPhone app is now available for MozyPro customers on either the iOS or Android mobile platforms.
As with the previous Mozy mobile app releases for MozyHome customers, MozyPro users can now access their Mozy backed up files from their mobile device. Additionally, they can download the file and use it with other iOS or Android apps that support that file type.
For MozyPro administrators, we understand you need to have control over access. That’s why in this new release, MozyPro admins can enable or disable the app for their organization through the MozyPro Admin Console.
Note If you or your organization encrypts data using a personal key, Mozy is working to add mobile file decryption to an upcoming release.

Today is “virtual moving day” here at Mozy. While our offices and focus remain the same, Mozy employees are transferring as an intact team to VMware from our mutual parent company, EMC. VMware and the Mozy team will continue the full portfolio of Mozy services. In addition, staff from both companies will begin to integrate longer-term development plans central to building and delivering hybrid cloud solutions. EMC retains the Mozy business as it has been delivering it for over four years now. An operational support agreement between EMC and VMware is in place to make this possible and ensure no impact to Mozy customers. We’ve developed a strong partnership with VMware and over these past several months it has become increasingly clear that moving to VMware will allow us to take advantage of and extend the synergies we’ve been building between the companies. VMware and Mozy share a vision for how cloud computing will transform IT and help businesses achieve greater agility. By joining forces, we believe we can accelerate the development of offerings that businesses are looking for.
Mozy customers will experience our service just the same – our service offerings, data centers, and customer support are completely unchanged. Mozy customers can count on us continuing to improve and invest in our existing services. In the future they can also expect greater interoperability between Mozy and VMware environments, and complementary end user and server-related services.

For this first version of the Mozy app, our goal is simple: We want to provide MozyHome customers an app for accessing their files backed up to Mozy. There are some very cool features, such as emailing a file, opening in other applications, and viewing photos or sharing them to Facebook. But we kept the feature set lean because we hope to update frequently based on user feedback. This version is the beginning of something that we plan to update regularly.
