Lots of memories in a wooden bat

While growing up in Southern California I played four years of Little League Baseball. For me, nothing said baseball more than a Louisville Slugger baseball bat. A wooden Louisville Slugger, of course. It wasn’t as if we had a choice back then; in those days, a bat was only made out of wood.

I hadn’t really thought much about bats in recent years until my boss returned from Kentucky. He was visiting Louisville Slugger. He got to hold bats made for The Sultan of Swat (Babe Ruth), Jackie (Jackie Robinson), and The Splendid Splinter (Ted Williams). Actually, Ted Williams was so great a hitter that he was also known as “The Greatest Hitter Who Ever Lived.”

Dave, our marketing guru, is a lucky guy to be sure. Who doesn’t want to hold the bat of “The Greatest Hitter Who Ever Lived” or the bat of “The Great Bambino” or the bat of Jackie, the first African-American to play in Major League Baseball and who broke barriers in more fields than just baseball? But lucky us to be protecting the data of Louisville Slugger who made bats for of all of those great hitters and continues to make bats for many of today’s great hitters.

Mozy backs up the data of the makers of the Louisville Slugger. That’s a win-win in my book.

The Louisville Slugger has been around a long time. Long enough for my dad to have used the bat, though not always for the right reasons. I remember him telling stories about growing up in San Francisco and knocking down advertising signs along Taraval all the way to the dunes with a bat as a youngster. I know, not the best reason for swinging a bat. But he redeemed himself long ago by becoming a rocket scientist and working closely with the Apollo Space Program. And teaching my brother and me the finer points of playing baseball and the proper use of a Louisville Slugger.

I still remember those batting fundamentals that my dad was always drilling into my head and my older brother’s head:

-The label goes up!

-Hands together—and line up the knuckles!

-Don’t break the wrists!

And, of course:

-Keep your eye on the ball!

Always keep your eye on the ball. That made such an impression on me that I can hear those words today as if I were hearing them for the first time. When I followed that rule and the others, and when I managed to hit the ball on the sweet spot on that wooden bat, the sound was enough to tell me that fielders were gonna be moving—and I’d better be hustling my way to first base.

Although memories tend to intensify our experiences from years ago—for better or for worse—I can remember that I was just an average ball player who never batted above .200. But I loved the game, and some of my choicest memories are playing catcher and feeling the sting of a fast ball popping in my glove, watching my brother pitch against future Hall of Famer Robin Yount, and knowing that my dad was logging stats in the announcer’s box.

Throughout my life, I have strived to “keep my eye” on life’s proverbial baseball. That has helped me to focus in spite of life’s distractions and disappointments. In some ways, I suppose I’ve succeeded from what I learned by focusing on those batting fundamentals, which for me really come down to three words: focus, focus, focus. If it’s important enough, you’ll focus on it. Looking back, playing baseball certainly taught me more about life than I ever could have appreciated as a youngster.

Say what you want about the financial benefits of the aluminum bat, but there’s nothing like the wood of a Louisville Slugger. And there’s nothing better than good memories, except making tomorrow’s memories today. So, keep your eye on the ball. Good things are bound to happen, including those few but wonderful moments when you hit one out of the park.

Customer Spotlight: Eileen Souza

Eileen Souza stored all of her digital data on an external hard drive. It held eight years of her personal financial and tax data. Among other things, the drive also stored 12 years of extensive family history research. Souza had collected hundreds of documents and digitized thousands of family photos, some of which are more than 100 years old.

When Souza started her computer on December 16, 2008, her external hard drive no longer appeared. She tried everything she could think of to access her data; she even bought new cables to see if her computer would be able to read the drive. It was dead, and she could not access any of her files. Years of family history research and irreplaceable photos of her family’s history flashed before her eyes. To add insult to injury, she faced the prospect of not paying her bills because all of her financial information was on the drive.

Luckily, Eileen had signed up with Mozy in August 2007, so she ordered a Mozy DVD restore with all of her 30,897 files. While waiting for the DVD’s to arrive, she downloaded from Mozy’s website all the information she needed to pay her bills on time.

“The DVDs arrived December 22, and by that evening I was 100% restored and back to normal with absolutely no loss of data. Needless to say I am still backing up all my data with Mozy,” Souza said.

Customer Spotlight: Howard Moore

Howard Moore from La Canada, California, received a frightening wake-up call one day, that convinced him of the need to find a better backup solution for his data.

Just days before Christmas, Howard and his family were victims of a house burglary.

Before signing up for Mozy, Howard would back up to external hard drives every night. He would alternate between the two drives, and take one off-site with him to his work office. However, since Howard has started working more from home, his second hard drive is no longer located off-site.

As a result, when the burglars came into Howard’s home, both of his hard drives were sitting next to his desktop. But, for whatever reason, Howard’s home office located in the back of the house, was not broken into. Maybe the burglars were too distracted by the Christmas gifts and his wife’s jewelery to even go into the office, but for whatever the reason, Howard is grateful.

"If the burglars had come into the back room, I would have lost everything," Howard said. "I had both external backup drives sitting right next to my PC! The home burglary convinced me of the need for off-site storage. I checked many other services for several weeks and Mozy was by far the best for me. It is designed for my needs."

Howard has been using Mozy ever since the burglary, and could not be happier with the service.

"I have only had to restore a few files since becoming a Mozy user, but I have tried multiple methods, and all of them could not have been any easier," Howard said. "What I like most about Mozy is that it’s always there, discretely doing its job."

Customer Spotlight: Andrew Fung

We love hearing back from our customers. Andrew Fung in Orlando recently told us about his Mozy story.

Before signing up for a MozyHome Unlimited account, Andrew backed up over 8,000 photos and hours of video manually on DVDs and external hard drives. It was tedious and time-consuming, but it paid off when his hard drive crashed. He was able to restore almost all of his data from his backups, but the crash made him wonder what would have happened if his on-site backups had been lost along with his hard drive.

After researching online backup solutions, he decided Mozy was a perfect fit for his situation.

“Mozy offers the simplicity, versatility and reliability I want at a cost that is actually less than what I would pay to maintain my own on-site storage,” Andrew said. “The client is easy to use but has enough options to ensure my selected data is secure and the few times I have had to restore a few files the process has been straight forward and quick.”

Signing up with Mozy has saved Andrew money and time while protecting his photos, video and other data.
