Announcing Mozy 2.0 For Windows!

If you’ve read our previous product release notes on our blog, you’ll notice that we always say that we’re excited to release a new version of Mozy. While this is true every time, it’s especially true this time, as we’re pleased to announce the general availability of Mozy 2.0 for Windows! Why are we so excited? Well, just take a look:

  • Up to 25% faster upload speeds – we know that one of the difficulties of online backup is that it takes time to move data online. We’ve made some significant changes to our client that makes that process a lot faster.
  • New interface – while we still have all the customizability and flexibility that power users have come to love and rely on to protect their data, we’ve made the Mozy client to be easier to configure, easier to understand, and easier to use for virtually everyone.

and last but not least…

  • Mozy 2xProtect! – we’ve preached it for years, and now we’re helping you practice it! Mozy 2.0 now allows you to back up to an external hard drive as well as our online servers. This means that you can have the speed, convenience, and protection of a local backup, while enjoying the peace of mind and extra safety that Mozy online backup already offers. We call it Mozy 2xProtect. To learn more about Mozy 2xProtect and how it can make your data even safer, check out our 2xProtect page!

As you can see, Mozy 2.0 represents a dramatic step forward in our product. We’re thrilled to be offering you a better, safer backup experience.

You can download the new Mozy 2.0 Windows client at the following places:

Client Release: Mac 1.6

We are once again proud to announce another Mozy for Mac release. Here are a few highlights from this latest release:

  • Memory and performance improvements – Making choices about which files to back up should be very fast. Backups start more quickly and use a limited amount of memory.

  • Translated into 9 non-English languages – German, Greek, British English, Castillian Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Slovenian. If you have chosen one of those languages in System Preferences, Mozy will use it automatically.
  • Other compatibility, stability and performance improvements.

Mozy and Windows 7

If you’re into computers, (and if you’re reading this, we’re willing to bet that you are) this is a pretty exciting week. We saw the release of some new Apple hardware earlier in the week, and Microsoft is releasing Windows 7 this week as well. With all this newness, we feel it’s important to remind you that you need to protect all that newness.

That’s why we recommend getting Mozy for your new stuff (be it Windows or Apple). After all, we’ve done thorough testing on both Snow Leopard and Windows 7 and Mozy works well on both. Just use the coupon code SAVE10 to get 10% off any new subscription to a 1- or 2- year MozyHome Unlimited plan! And if you’re upgrading to Windows 7 this week, remember to be safe and back up first!

  • Improved memory usage – The client will run much faster and use fewer resources, especially during backups and restores.
  • Better client transparency during configuration – We’ve added a file scanning progress indicator, and warnings when a backup is started before the client is fully configured and when changes might be lost when the configuration is closed without saving.

Client Release: Mac 1.4

This week we released Mac 1.4 for both MozyHome and MozyPro. The new software includes numerous stability improvements. It also provides a helpful new feature for consumers and businesses—the ability to set a policy that excludes certain types of files from being backed up.

You may wonder why anyone would want to exclude any type of file from being backed up. Why not just back up everything on the hard drive? Well, those are fair questions.

If you’re a consumer using MozyHome to back up personal files and you have a virtual machine installed on your computer, you may prefer to back up the files in the virtual machine rather than the entire virtual machine itself.

If you’re a business using MozyPro to back up your employees’ data, you may want to set a policy that excludes certain files types, like music, for certain employees. Given the economic conditions, we want you as a business to have the ability to control your costs and back up the files critical to your business.

To see the full release notes and download the new client version, check out our MozyHome and MozyPro update sections . Please note that you don’t have to download and install the new client manually, as your old client will auto-update within a week.

Client Release: Windows 1.14

We are once again proud to announce another Mozy Windows client release. Here are a few highlights from this latest release:

  • Added support for EFS encrypted files – The client now supports backing up only the portions of the files that have changed for EFS encrypted files, rather than the entire file.
  • Improved the speed of launching configuration – When you launch the configuration utility, it now displays much faster than before.
  • Added welcome tab in the client configuration – The client configuration window now has a Welcome tab that displays information about how Mozy works, how to select files for backup, and how to perform a restore.
  • Added tooltips to the tabs in client configuration – Added pop-up text that displays when a mouse is hovered over a tab (tooltips) in the client Configuration window. The tooltips explain the tasks that can be completed on each tab of the Configuration window.
  • Enhanced locked file support – The client now uses Windows Volume Shadow Services (VSS) for all files to prevent locking. This allows files to be used by other applications while they are being backed up.
  • Improved the password change flow – Now when you change your password on the Mozy Web site, you are automatically asked to enter your new password when a backup occurs or when you launch the Configuration window.
  • Other compatibility and performance improvements

Client Release: Windows 1.12

As part of our relentless effort to deliver the best online backup service in the world, we are proud to announce the 1.12 release of the Mozy Windows client. Here’s a couple of highlights from this latest release:

  • We’ve added a search box to the restore tab within the client that lets you search for specific files within your backup. Previously, you could only browse for files and had to know where on their computer it was located, when it was backed up, or in which backup set it was included. You can now search for files on the restore tab in the client.
  • We’ve differentiated backup sets (i.e. all music files) and file system folders (i.e. the “my music” folder) under the restore tab. We had received some feedback from our customers that the visual display in the restore tab made it difficult to distinguish between file system folders and backup sets. Now, this new overlay icon on the backup set folder icon helps to differentiate it from the file system folders.
  • We have added the ability to re-associate a new computer. In the event of disaster or data loss, you can use Mozy to easily restore your backup files to another computer. You can also migrate your backup files from one computer to another, as well as transfer files from an old computer to a new computer. You can find additional information about replacing a computer here.
