Learn more about our Cloud Security Team here at Mozy, a major part of our efforts to keep your data safe and secure.
Q: Can you tell me about the Mozy Cloud Security team?
A: The Cloud Security team at Mozy consists of 5 members with a combined 75 years of information security experience. We have a lot of fun at Mozy, but when it comes to securing our customers’ data, we’re dead serious. We hold ourselves to the highest standards in providing the safest, most reliable online backup service on the planet. The team is comprised of security experts from a variety of information security backgrounds with the common goal of keeping our customer data secure. This goal has been a driving force behind building Mozy’s Cloud Security program to where it is today.
Q: What is the role of the Cloud Security team at Mozy?
A: It’s our job to ensure security of our customers’ data. As technology and threat vectors continue to change and evolve, so must the team. The Mozy Security team provides training, thought leadership and consulting to the rest of the organization. We’re constantly making incremental changes to improve the security footprint.
Q: What audits, certifications, or other security measures has Mozy achieved?
A: Mozy applies a risk-based methodology to its Security program. A SOC 1 SSAE 16 Type II audit (formerly called a SAS 70 Type II audit) is performed on an annual basis as well as surveillance audits between ISO 27001 certifications. We’re proud of the fact that Mozy is the first online backup vendor to achieve ISO 27001 certification.

All was quiet as I finished my term paper, but my blood chilled when a pop-up message appeared on my screen…
It was dark, despite the full moon, as he made his way to the library with laptop in hand…
She was in the middle of reading her friend’s blog when she heard a sound…
The laptop sat open on the table…

The Mozy iOS app now supports data decryption for customers using personal key encryption. Android update due within weeks.
Since its initial release in March this year, the Mozy app for iOS (iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch devices) has quickly become a favorite feature for Mozy customers. With the app you can access any file you have backed up to Mozy right from your mobile device. Complete with photo previews, document viewing, and the ability to open files in other applications or send them via email, the app makes Mozy more than just a way to protect against data loss. Along with similar access through any browser, the app provides a way to access all your personal and professional files from anywhere.
Here’s a quick retrospective of the progress of our iOS app so far:
1.01 introduces full-screen support for iPad as a universal binary (April 2011)
1.1 extends support to MozyPro end users (June 2011)
Today, we released version 1.2, now available at no charge from the App Store. Aside from several performance enhancements and bug fixes, this version delivers a feature that many (often quite vocal) customers have been awaiting: personal key data decryption.
About Personal Key Data Decryption
To protect customer privacy, Mozy online backup always encrypts the data for each file before sending it to Mozy. About 95% of our customers opt for Mozy’s default encryption. The remaining 5% opt to employ a personal key for encrypting their backups. When you encrypt with a personal key, it ensures that the only person who can readily decrypt your files is you. Of course, this also means that Mozy has no way to decrypt your data if you forget your personal key.
Data Decryption Comes to the iOS App
Until today, customers who opted to use personal key encryption could not access the content of their files through the app. The app was incapable of decrypting downloaded files.
With this latest release, you can set the personal key used for backup on each of your computers (even if each uses a different key). The mobile app can then download any file, use the key to decrypt its content, and then allow you to use the file as you need. You can view it, email it, or even open it in another app.
Mobile & the Trade-offs of Using a Personal Key
There are certain services that Mozy performs online to support the Mozy app. For example, the file names used by digital cameras make it hard to know what’s in a photo, so the Mozy app displays photo thumbnails.
When you view a folder containing photos, an online service generates a thumbnail for each photo, allowing the app to download a small image instead of whole photos, saving time and bandwidth.
However, if your photos are encrypted with a personal key, then Mozy can only provide a generic thumbnail indicating that Mozy cannot read the photo.
But you can still download the whole photo and–once downloaded and decrypted by the mobile app–you can view it on your device.
Your Turn: Go Rate the Update
We know many Mozy customers have been waiting for this update. If you’re one of them, please rate the Mozy app in the App Store.
A Note to Android Users
We know you want personal key support, too. We’re working on it right now and aim to release the 1.2 update for Android before the end of October.
We want to thank everyone who participated in our Mozy Saved My Bacon promotion earlier this month. “Six weeks ago I came home from work, opened my front door, and found my house was on fire! Immediately I had the urge to take on the dangerous task of grabbing personal items…my son’s baby photos, our wedding photos, financial documentation. In a flash, I remember, it’s all backed up to Mozy. I was able to turn myself around and leave knowing that my most precious memories were safe and sound. We were lucky to have contained damage and my computer is safe and sound. In addition, Mozy was very convenient because I have been able to access all my important computer files remotely until we are back in our home again. What a relief Mozy has been!! (PS- My house has smelled strangely like bacon for the last few weeks…)”
“I accidentally put ALL my files in the trash, then I EMPTIED the trash. Did I notice when it took 20 minutes to empty the trash? No, because I was rushing to leave on vacation. The trashed items included all past mortgage, credit and tax information, scanned important documents like my marriage certificate and my children’s birth certificates, all my personal photos from the past 3 years, all my receipts and etc. etc. Well, I got back from vacation a week later and looked for my files. They were gone. Nowhere to be found. You can imagine my surprise and horror when I could not find my files. Slowly, the reason WHY the trash had taken so long to empty before I left on vacation dawned on me …. Well, Mozy really did save my bacon! I went to the website and requested a restore of all my files. This took a short while, but it worked. Whew. Mozy home, I am sold forever.”
“Boy did Mozy Save My Bacon!!! I had just come off running the Nile River in Uganda and the dropped a group of us in Kampala on a main thoroughfare but in Africa, there are no street lights. I had my computer, camera, Kindle, and other electronics in a bag in my hand. As i got off the bus, out of the dark, someone comes up from behind my left shoulder and snatches my bag. There was NO way to run after the guy and retrieve it. And a police report did little good. It was the start of my vacation and I was devastated. My whole life was on there. My biggest loss – my photo library!!! Thank goodness, for Mozy!!!!! My son, back in the states, was able to buy me another netbook and restore ALL my data!!!!! Hooray!! He sent me the new computer and life is good! I ALWAYS back up! I’m off to Africa again for 3 months of work and feel “secure” knowing that if it happens again, I’ve got my data….”
“I am a doctoral student. I was writing my comprehensive exams; the major exams I had to take before being allowed to write my dissertation. I was given three days to write two 20+ page essays on a prompt. I spent the first day preparing both essays and had planned on writing one essay for each additional day. I spent the second day writing my first essay and collapsed in bed exhausted. On the third day, I was going to proofread my essay from the previous day before writing my last essay. But, it was GONE! I couldn’t find that I saved it anywhere, in any of my files. After panicking and crying my eyes out, I remembered that I set Mozy to automatically back up my files. I checked and there it was!! I restored the file and was able to finish my ‘comps’ in due time. Mozy definitely saved my bacon that day!”
“I was finishing up culinary school this June and started to assemble photographs for my portfolio when I realized I was missing a significant chunk of time. I had lost eight months of pictures and nearly had a meltdown! Not only was this portfolio important to my grade, but it was supposed to show the progression of your work throughout the program, so I knew using only recent pictures wouldn’t cut it. Mozy to the rescue! I found and restored all of my pictures with ease, finished my portfolio and submitted it on time. No word on whether Mozy helped me earn that 100% . . .”
And now for our Grand Prize winner, who wins a free 2-year MozyHome subscription, a “Mozy Saved My Bacon” T-shirt, a $50 Bacon Gift Certificate, and a copy of the book “Bacon: A Love Story”….
“In April of 2010, I had my third child- a little girl. Very tiny, cute and cuddly! We brought her home from the hospital on a Saturday afternoon. We celebrated with our family who had come in town, snapped a few hundred pictures, and tried to settle in to a new normal with a new baby and two small children. As we awoke Sunday morning, we were evacuating our house with our three young children and nothing else as the flood waters rose towards our home in Nashville. I cried as the volunteers drove us away from our home watching our plants disappear under water, our fence go floating away, and the muddy water wash over my husband’s newly built deck. However, as long as my family was safe, I knew Mozy would protect all our computer data- even if the water destroyed our PC. Thanks for saving our bacon, Mozy!”
Congratulations to all of our winners and again, a big thank you to everyone who participated. If you’re a winner and haven’t heard from Mozy yet, please e-mail email@example.com to claim your prize. We will also be reaching out to you this week to get in touch.
We are excited to announce the arrival of our Mozy Data Shuttle™ service for MozyPro® customers in the U.S.
With today’s upload bandwidth speeds, the initial backup for large data sets can take weeks, and sometimes even months. Mozy Data Shuttle is a delivery vehicle designed specifically to solve this problem and will enable businesses to quickly, easily, and securely back up their data to a Mozy data center within days, making this a great solution for anyone with 100 GB of data or more to back up.
How does it work? Mozy ships a Data Shuttle drive (or drives) to you overnight. When the drive arrives, simply plug the Mozy Data Shuttle device into your server and allow the MozyPro client to transfer the data to the device. During the transfer, the Mozy client will encrypt your data twice: once with the default Mozy key or your personal key, and then again with a unique/one-time use key. Once your data is safely loaded on the Data Shuttle, return it to Mozy with the provided overnight shipping label. As always, we then store your data encrypted at rest. Your server’s incremental backups can begin even before you return the drive to Mozy!
Mozy Data Shuttle is currently available in the U.S. for datasets from 100 GB to 8 TB. Mozy will be in attendance at VMworld 2011 in Las Vegas next week, Aug. 29 through Sept. 1. We’re looking forward to catching up with our friends and spreading the good news about Mozy!
Now that we’re closely aligned with VMware, we’ve put our minds together and are working on some projects we’re very excited about. Make sure to stop by our booth (#233) to find out more about Active Directory integration for MozyPro powered by VMware Horizon, how Mozy and Shavlik are now working together on a project that simplifies IT management for SMBs, and Mozy Stash (our file syncing and sharing service). Find out more info about Stash or sign up for the private beta here.
These highlights are just a few of the things we’ll be talking about at VMworld this year. As always, we’ll have plenty of Mozy swag to give away!
We are excited to announce that the Mozy iPhone app is now available for MozyPro customers on either the iOS or Android mobile platforms.
As with the previous Mozy mobile app releases for MozyHome customers, MozyPro users can now access their Mozy backed up files from their mobile device. Additionally, they can download the file and use it with other iOS or Android apps that support that file type.
For MozyPro administrators, we understand you need to have control over access. That’s why in this new release, MozyPro admins can enable or disable the app for their organization through the MozyPro Admin Console.
Note If you or your organization encrypts data using a personal key, Mozy is working to add mobile file decryption to an upcoming release.

You can find the updated Mozy iPhone app in the iTunes App Store (either from iTunes or your iOS device), and you can either send the Mozy Android app from the Android Market, or access and download the app from the market on your Android device.
June is Computer Backup Awareness Month. At Mozy, we are encouraged that there is a “holiday” about something we obviously consider to be very important. However, backing up files one month a year is a little bit like brushing your teeth just one month a year. In order for it to be effective, it must be done every day, all year round.
If that sounds daunting, it doesn’t have to be. Here’s what we believe at Mozy:
Backup should be painless. No one wants to spend their whole weekend backing up files. The truth is, if backup takes too long, it won’t get done. You should only need to set up backup once, and then it should work automatically.
Your files should be secure at all times. Your files should be absolutely secure at all points in the backup process with military-grade security encryption. Your backup program should encrypt your files before they leave your network, and then store them in a secure, remote location that’s only accessible to you.
Your backups should be smart. Your backup system should be smart enough to back up the files you want, and to only back up new data and parts of a file that have changed. It should even be able to back up open and locked files.
You should be able to access your files anytime, anywhere. Getting your data back should never be a battle. Whether it’s from your home computer, from work, or traveling to another location, you should be able to access your data from anywhere ‑ easily and securely. After all, it is your data.
Backup should be constant: You canset the terms for how and when backup should be done, but it must be done regularly and continuously.
A lot happens in a year. Pictures, taxes, your business’ financial statements and reports: all significant documents that must be preserved. One month of being aware isn’t enough. Make sure your backup is working for you every day of the year.
