"Blue screen of death" nearly spoils Hawaiian Vacation

“Our clients demand the best technology solutions, and backup services are no different.”

Kelli Turchon spent a weeklong honeymoon in Hawaii only to return to a fatal hard drive crash at the office. With months of business-critical information stored directly on her computer, Turchon worried her files would be inaccessible, but within hours MozyPro restored everything to a new computer and she was up and running again as if nothing had happened.

After a weeklong honeymoon in Maui, Kelli Turchon returned to her Dallas office at Pariveda Solutions ready to catch up on all she had missed. She sat at her desk, turned on her computer, and immediately panicked.

“Right in front of me was the ‘blue screen of death’ and a blinking white cursor,” Turchon said. Amid the wedding festivities, her hard drive failed, taking months of reports, data, and correspondence with it.

“I was worried,” she said. “Everything was gone in a second, but I logged on to my Mozy account and immediately started restoring my files onto a new computer. Fortunately, everything was restored, and I was back up and working in no time.”

Turchon, like all employees at Pariveda Solutions, relies on MozyPro for her corporate backup needs. Each time her computer is idle, Mozy backs up the changes to her files within a few minutes. Such regular, automatic backups ensure that data is safe and current in the event of a computer crash. Because Pariveda is in the IT consulting business, it’s also essential that their own proprietary information be protected.

With the company growing at an explosive rate in multiple offices across the United States, Pariveda Solutions needed an affordable yet easy-to-use backup solution. The company initially used Connected Backup from Iron Mountain Digital for data protection, since many of Pariveda’s founding partners were familiar with the service from previous employment.

“We grew frustrated with the lack of support, and we were moving to Vista which was not an option at the time with Connected,” said Brian Orrell, a vice president at Pariveda Solutions’ Dallas office. “In addition, the software tended to dramatically slow down our computers when we were doing backups, so we started evaluating other options.

“We deal with clients that need infrastructure organization, and we have intelligent, technical people at Pariveda. Our clients demand the best technology solutions, and backup services are no different.”

After two months of internal evaluation and research, Orrell was impressed with MozyPro and started transitioning Pariveda Solutions over to its service.

“MozyPro turned out to be significantly less expensive,” he said. “In addition, the management tools are impressive. We have a corporate web view of where each employee is with their backups.” MozyPro’s Administrative Console allows Orrell to create custom reports, remotely update employees to the latest MozyPro client version, set up automatic email alerts, and more. Orrell can also add additional administrators on the account and define their scope of responsibility.

“MozyPro is more flexible than the other backup solutions we looked at,” Orrell said. “We even have the option to increase storage for individuals and group accounts when we need to.”

MozyPro offers users the flexibility of running backups either automatically in the background throughout the day based on computer resource usage or on a schedule at night after peak business hours. The flexibility allows employees at Pariveda Solutions the freedom to choose when they prefer to back up their files and how often. Instead of staying an extra ten minutes at the end of each workday to follow a rigid schedule, backups are completed at their convenience.

Because it’s managed via a web-based Admin Console, MozyPro easily accommodates Pariveda’s remote users. Backups and restores are as simple for remote users as they are for in-house employees. If a remote employee had their laptop stolen 30 minutes prior to an important meeting, Turchon, back at the office, could retrieve critical files via the Admin Console.

“The best thing about Mozy is that no matter where you are, you can restore anything you need via the web,” Turchon said. “Any of our employees can back up and restore files from the office, home, or anywhere they have access to the internet.”
