What are the known bugs in the current version of MozyHome Mac?

Current Bugs that we have had reported by customers:

  • Some users getting Connection Error 1:

This is actually a known issue with the system, and we will hopefully have it fixed very soon.In the meantime, here are some troubleshooting steps you can follow in an attempt to resolve this issue:

1) Open “System Preferences” from the Apple menu in the top left corner of your screen.
2) Under "Internet & Network," choose "Sharing."
3) On the "Firewall" tab, create a new exception by clicking "New..."
4) Under the dropdown list for "Port Name," choose "Other," then enter “443” for the TCP Port Number(s). Under "Description," type “mozy” and click “OK.”

This should allow MacMozy to proceed to our servers through port 443 and should ultimately resolve the issue. If it does not, and you’re still getting ConnectionError1, try manually stopping and restarting the Mozy backup.

We have also found that some people who are using a wireless connection are dropping their network connection and that is why they are getting the error message. If you are using wireless and get the error message try plugging in an ethernet cable and attempting the backup again

If either of these options do not work then please e-mails us at macsupport@mozy.com

Will MozyHome Mac be incorporating all of the features of the MozyHome Windows version?

Obviously there are several features in the Windows client that are very convenient if not necessary. We will be incorporating several of these features as MozyHome Mac matures, but we cannot offer a timetable for when specific features will be added.

If you would like to see a specific feature that is not yet a part of MozyHome Mac, let us know at macsupport@mozy.com

Does MozyHome Mac need to be open in order for it to back up?

No, MozyHome Mac will back up regardless of whether the Status window or the Configuration window are open. You can check the status of your backups by clicking the Mozy icon in the menu bar at the top of your screen and then selecting "Show Status Window"

You can see how past backups have gone by selecting "Show Backup History"

Someone asked me to send in my mozy.log file? How do I get to it?

In the latest release of MozyHome for the Mac we have changed the location of the log file. Below are the instructions for getting the log file and sending it to Mozy.

The Log file has now moved and it's now here: /Library/Logs/mozy.log

Note that this is NOT in your user's Library, but rather your system's. In a Finder, start from the Hard Disk (Possibly named Macintosh HD), rather than your Home folder.

Alternatively, you can use Spotlight to find it.

The log files for previous versions of Mozyhome specifically 0.6.2.4 and before are located in /var/log/mozy.log. The instructions below tell you how you might be able to attach that log to an e-mail.

For the non tech savvy, you can attach the log to an email by clicking the attachment button and typing "/var/log" into the search bar (with the magnifying glass in it). Then select mozy.log from the main frame in the attachment window.

If that doesn't work there are a few other things you can try:

  1. Open a terminal and type "cp /var/log/mozy.log ~" and hit enter. This will put a copy of the mozy.log file in your user folder.

  2. Download Mozilla Firefox. Mozilla includes the capability of browsing to system folders on your Mac, including /var/log. Once you have Firefox open, browse to file:///var/log/mozy.log. Click File, then Save and save the file to your Desktop. Then attach it to the email.

Why do I get a .dmg file when I restore?

A .dmg file is the only way to maintain all of the metadata (information about the file that is not included in the file itself) for your files so that they appear the same to your system as they did before you lost them.

MozyHome Mac won't populate my backup sets. It never loads!

The most common cause of this so far is Spotlight. Spotlight is a great indexing tool built in to OS 10.4.*. We use it to index and populate backup sets. It is common however, to have a third party program, such as Quicksilver to run instead of Spotlight.

Open a terminal (under Applications>Utilities) Type: " grep SPOTLIGHT /etc/hostconfig " Below, it with either print:

SPOTLIGHT=-YES or SPOTLIGHT=-NO-

If -YES-, you're fine, but if mozy is not working... we may have found a bug, so please report it!

If -NO-, mozy will not be able to populate the sets correctly, so unless there's a specific reason you have it shut off, please enable it.

To do this, in terminal type:

"sudo pico /etc/hostconfig" Find the line that says "SPOTLIGHT=-NO-" and change it to say "SPOTLIGHT=-YES-" Hit Ctrl-O (that's capital O) Hit Ctrl-X

Reboot your computer

Where do you get the decrypt utility for MozyHome Mac?

If you used the Mozy key for encryption, then don't worry, you don't need it.

Otherwise, when you downloaded and mounted the MozyHome Mac .dmg file it created a folder on your desktop called Mozy-[version#]. If you open that folder and go to the tools folder, you'll find decrypt utility for MozyHome Mac.

My decrypt utility doesn't seem to be working... What can I do?

We have found that more often than not, the issue lies within the path and archive of the restore itself. When you download a restore, it comes in a .dmg image, and without further action, you cannot decrypt it. To properly decrypt your restore, simply do this:

  1. First double click the image (mozy-###.dmg) to mount it. (this will create a Volume in the same directory as the dmg called "Mozy Restore")(it is also viewable, and selectable by the decrypt utility by browsing to /Volumes, which in a Finder is also where you'll find the Mac HD and any other Hard Drives or Volumes)... Therefore making the folders/files within it available for manipulation and decryption.

  2. Once you have opened the archive, you can use the decrypt utility to select the directories within it, by browsing to the volume "Mozy Restore" under the Source browse button, choosing a Destination under the "Destination" Browse button. You can now safely decrypt your data.

Please note: If you remove the files from the archive before attempting decryption, the utility will NOT work. You must only mount the dmg image, do not attempt to drag and drop files and folders out from within it.

If you have any questions about this, please send us an email, being as in-depth as possible, to macsupport@mozy.com.

How do I know if I have the latest version?

If you go to http://mozy.com/account/download it will list the latest versions for both Mac and Windows.

You can see which version you are running by clicking the Mozy icon and then Configure Mozy. Then click the Mozy menu in the menu bar at the top and select About Mozy.

My username and password aren't working!
