Paul C.'s Mozy story
I was on a plane coming back - it had been a long flight. I had been working on my MacBook. I had walked out, got past security and I said I left my MacBook on the plane. I went back to try and get it but they wouldn’t let me back on the plane. I thought - you know it’s fine, I know where it is. I never hear anything back from the airport, never heard anything back from the airline. Reported it to the police, didn’t really hear anything back from them either and I wrote it off. It was pretty old. The thing that made me feel really good was that I had everything backed up on Mozy. So, I wasn’t worried about the data, I would just pull the data back up and put it on another machine and was a happy camper. A couple of months later my wife calls me up and says she lost something. So I said alright, I’ll go on Mozy and I’ll pull it back out. I’m looking at the Mozy servers pulling down and I realized that this thing was still backing up, but backing up under someone else’s name now! So I went to the police and they gave us a subpoena, which allowed Mozy to pull the IP address and then we went and crossed referenced the IP address with a physical address. And the port authority policemen went around and guess what - there was my laptop! It was an interesting experience, and it was tremendously satisfying to know that we got it back and that the police had got the right person. Everything had been backed up, all of the data was there so it wasn’t so much that the catastrophe would have been to lose the data and I never had to worry about that. I’m Paul and I use Mozy.
