In Martha's Words
I'd been pretty lackadaisical about backing up my computer files. But when the California fires hit close to home a couple of years ago, I started to pay
attention to savvy writers on all the bulletin boards lecturing about backup, and I realized I needed to do something.
I tried out a couple of backup solutions, but they were too expensive and difficult to understand. Then I read about Mozy's unlimited online backup for just
$4.95 per month. I couldn't believe it was so cheap!
I signed up, and just a few days later, I turned on my laptop, only to hear my hard drive click. I sat there looking at the black screen thiking about all my documents, research, books, and photographs. I don't keep a diary, but I think of my email Sent file as a diary. There was a couple of years' worth of
correspondence on there that I would have been devastated to lose. I was just sick at the thought of losing my digital past and, to some degree, my future,
because I also had lots of raw material gathered for later projects. It was just an awful feeling.
I called support and received some hand holding over the phone to restore my files onto DVDs. Just as I couldn't believe that the price was so low, I couldn't
believe that a couple days later, all my data showed up at my house. Even after I had the disks and saw that everything was there, I couldn't believe it. It
was surreal -- and a real relief!
The world is divided into two groups: people who have suffered a hard drive crash, and those who will. I never thought my hard drive would crash, but I
avoided becoming another statistic because all my data was backed up.
I'm always looking for things to make my life easier. Unlimited online backup for just $4.95 per month? The cost is so small the process is so easy –
why wouldn't you back up?
