My name is Kris and I work for Mozy

Welcome back to another edition of our “My name is…” series – this blog series is dedicated to introducing you to some of our in-house talent, the talent that keeps the Mozy running. There is no question that we are very fortunate to be able to work with intelligent, compassionate people from around the globe.

This month we’d like to introduce you to Kris Meulemans, one of our EMEA senior Cloud Systems Engineers. Kris spends his time helping customers, sales teams and many others to spread the Mozy love. Kris has been instrumental in helping our EMEA customers with familiarizing themselves with the awesomeness that is Mozy. I know that Kris has helped me with many requests over the months and has always been extremely accommodating.

My name is Kris and I work for Mozy

I define my workspace as …
Whatever bit of space I can put my laptop down on, although I do love my double screen set up.

A device I can’t live without …
My mp3 player – although a snazzy laptop that boots in no time is a close second.

When I arrive at work, I typically start off by …
Saying hi to my colleagues, discussing any hot issues over a coffee and getting started into my email.

My work routine is …
Never the same and always as efficient as possible due to the many hats I wear during a day. Prioritize, run emails through the do, delegate, delete routine and have regular coffees to keep up with ‘the pulse’. That’s if I’m not travelling somewhere.

I do/do not listen to music at work and it helps me work better because …
I definitely do, my headset is on most of the times. In a nearly open plan office with people on the phone all around me it’s the only way to get and stay in ‘the zone’.

The best advice I can give a recent college graduate looking to do what I do is …
Learn as much as possible in any way possible. Your degree is an entry key; the rest comes down to constantly adapting and continuously improving what you do. If you see problems, fix them.

Outside of work, I am passionate about …
My family and friends, Saltimbocca and music. There are many stories attached to the second, suffice to say that any Italian restaurant can be judged by it.
Author’s note: I will have to agree with Kris on this statement – Saltimbocca is definitely at the top of my list for Italian favorites. Oh the deliciousness that is Italian fare…

My eating habits are …
Quality first, as much as possible with friends and always ending with a good coffee.

If I could be someone for a day – I would be …
A drummer on tour with a world famous band.

The “secret sauce” that makes me who I am …
The exactly measured recipe combining techie consultancy, project management, general fixing of things, listening, coaching, strategic thinking and a special secret selection of spices.
Author’s note: Well put, Kris!

My name is Scott and I work at Mozy

Welcome to our first anniversary of the “My name is…”, our blog series on introducing you to some of our talented team members who directly contribute to the success of Mozy. Mozy has been fortunate to win “Utah’s Best Place to Work” four times in a row. We’re successful; our products are secure and sustainable, and we value our customers. Having said that, Mozy wouldn’t be the amazing place it is without our dedicated, passionate and generous team members. We are very fortunate to be surrounded by extremely intelligent people who inspire and motivate others around them.

This time, we’d like you to meet Scott Lee, our Director of Marketing. Scott is a key driving force behind all the marketing initiatives that we undertake for our business-to-business products and channel marketing for MozyPro and MozyEnterprise. Scott has provided some key insights to how and where Mozy should position itself, in the B2B space.

My name is Scott and I work at Mozy

I define my workspace as …
Depends on the day or time of day. Sometimes it’s a desk, sometimes a conference room, sometimes the hallway.

A device I can’t live without …
iPhone.
Author’s note: I mean, if you own an iPhone then you know this feeling (myself included)! How did we ever manage without it?!?!?

When I arrive at work, I typically start off by …
Filling up my water cup…must stay hydrated. I check email, the business dashboard, and then usually wander over to the sales team to see how things are going. Then off to meetings or whatever.

My work routine is …
I am a list guy. I make a list of objectives for each quarter, then a list of weekly projects or tasks, and manage to that each day. Of course it doesn’t all get done, but it keeps me focused on the big things while limiting as much minutiae as possible. I even schedule time in my calendar for tasks as if they were meetings. I also float around a lot to talk face to face with people, hear what they think, etc. It’s crazy how many great ideas come from actual conversations! #emailhasitslimits

I do/do not listen to music at work and it helps me work better because …
Definitely do. I have Spotify or Pandora on when I’m at my desk, usually listening to classical if I’m in a heavy analytical mindset, classic rock for pounding through email, or a mix of stuff if I’m writing/reviewing content.

The best advice I can give a recent college graduate looking to do what I do is …
Work hard, work smart, work with others not against them.

Outside of work, I am passionate about …
My family (my wife and I have five children), golf, road cycling, and college sports. Go Cougars!

My eating habits are …
Better than they have been for a while. I have a weakness for chips and salsa though.

If I could be someone for a day – I would be …
Jimmer Fredette in a Utah Jazz uniform.

The “secret sauce” that makes me who I am …
Intense curiosity.

My name is Richard and I work for Mozy

It’s that time again when we introduce you to one of our stellar team members and this month we’d like to present Richard Hales, Mozy’s very own Business Development Director. Richard is one of the team that makes sure that we help our business partners build competitive advantage. He is an extremely versatile person and anyone who has interacted with him knows that he is a man of integrity. Mozy is extremely fortunate to have Richard as part of our “secret sauce.”

My name is Richard and I work for Mozy

I define my workspace as …
Wherever I am.

A device I can’t live without …
Mains adapter.

When I arrive at work, I typically start off by …
Waking up.

My work routine is …
Follow the sun, except to some extent on Sundays!

I do/do not listen to music at work and it helps me work better because …
I’m talking to people.

The best advice I can give a recent college graduate looking to do what I do is …
Use your ears and mouth in proportion.

Outside of work, I am passionate about …
Passion. And understanding. And challenging exploration.

My eating habits are …
A constant battle against a million years of evolution that has bred humans to consume more calories than necessary for storage ready for the lean times (that no longer come).

If I could be someone for a day – I would be …
Me.

The “secret sauce” that makes me who I am …
Knowing that everyone else is my equal, and I theirs. (Irrespective of their inflated badge/label/title).

My name is Steve and I work for Mozy

Thanks for tuning back into our monthly series where you get to spend some one-on-one, quality time with some of the shining jewels in Mozy’s crown – our employees. This month we’d like you to meet Steve Jensen, Mozy’s Senior Manager of Public Relations. Steve’s responsibilities include PR in the US, analyst relations, and managing our customer reference program. Steve is one of the most genuinely nicest guys you will ever meet – he is not only genuine in his interactions with others but he is also genuine in his PR efforts for Mozy.

My name is Steve and I work for MozyI define my workspace as …
A place to stare at the screen and pound away on the keyboard while seeking inspiration from Ansel Adams and all 30 major league baseball logos staring back at me.

A device I can’t live without …
My tablet – for personal reading time and play time with my kids.
Author’s note: Steve won his tablet at a company event and has embraced all the benefits that come with owning a tablet – researching, reading, watching movies – all while on-the-go. He just makes us so proud! (single tear glistens at the corner of my eye)

When I arrive at work, I typically start off by …
Being the only person in the office (on the planet?) to read the morning hard copy newspaper.

My work routine is …
Emails, phone calls, defending baseball from attacks by the marketing team, and enjoying the interaction with journalists, analysts, customers, and great vendors.

I do/do not listen to music at work and it helps me work better because …
Usually I don’t listen to music at work. If I did I would miss out on all the zingers from Brent Bird, two cubes over.

The best advice I can give a recent college graduate looking to do what I do is …
If you don’t have a love for how news is created, and the written word in general, go into sales instead.

Outside of work, I am passionate about …
Skiing in the winter, perennial gardening in the summer, and spending time with my family year round.

My eating habits are …
Chicken burgers and burritos somehow make me feel less guilty than hamburgers.

If I could be someone for a day – I would be …
Teddy Roosevelt

The “secret sauce” that makes me who I am …
Talk is cheap. Actions speak louder than words.

My name is Jamie and I work for Mozy

Hello again! Glad you could make it back for another session of our “My name is … and I work for Mozy” blog series. We’ve attempted to expand across all our functional areas to show you that Mozy has successfully managed to find the best-of-the-best in talent. And speaking of talent … we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Morningstar, Mozy Principal Product Manager. Jamie works closely with the Mozy development teams to help guide them in creating the right thing at the right time, in the right way. In her words “Basically, I listen to a lot of people about what they need, work with the engineers to get it done, and then tell people about it!” Simple enough, right? Yes, if you’re Jamie.

My name is Jamie and I work for Mozy

I define my workspace as …
Gypsy chic. That makes the clutter sound a lot quainter than, “really messy because tidying up never seems to make it to the top of my to-do list.”

A device I can’t live without …
My teapot. Wireless headphones are a close second.

When I arrive at work, I typically start off by …
Completing the top thing on my list. I try to use those precious morning hours for in-depth thinking and save email for later in the day.

My work routine is …
Collaborative. Most of my job revolves around working with the development teams to plan and create features, so I spend a lot of time describing and prioritizing customer needs and then explaining it all to the engineering teams, my fellow Product Owners, and stakeholders like Sales, Support, and Executives.

I do/do not listen to music at work and it helps me work better because …
I do listen to music when I can carve out 30 or 40 minutes of thinking and writing time. Music helps me focus on my work rather than listening to the hubbub around me. But most of the time I don’t listen to music because I need to be available to the people around me.

The best advice I can give a recent college graduate looking to do what I do is …
Figure out what makes you special in your field of study. My undergraduate degree is in Computer Science and early on I realized that I had a distinct ability to bridge between different parts of the organization. So I transformed it into a career in Product Management and I love the challenges and rewards of translating between different parts of the company and helping developers create the most important thing as efficiently as possible. It’s certainly not what I expected to do when I walked into my CS101 class, but I’m glad that I recognized my unique strengths in my field and pursued them.

Outside of work, I am passionate about …
The welfare of the world’s 210 million orphans. Getting more young women interested in careers in technology. Agile software development. And skiing, hiking, and camping in the amazing Utah great outdoors. I’m a passionate person.
Author’s note: I once read that what a person does for others without expecting anything in return is what really shows you their character. I know that Jamie is very involved in the community and with women’s groups. Good for you, Jamie!

My eating habits are …
Convenient. Like most people, I try to eat healthy, but left to my own devices I’d probably eat Lucky Charms for two or maybe three meals a day. They really are magically delicious..

If I could be someone for a day – I would be …
Myself on vacation. Is that lame? I really like being me… I’d just like to be me on the ski slopes rather than in my office. Or if I need to come up with an answer that’s more inspirational I’d be Roald Dahl because I wonder what it was like in his head, writing such heartwarming yet seriously twisted stories. Neil Gaiman would work, too.
Author’s note: as a fellow working mom, I understand how precious alone time is! When I dream of an ideal vacation – it usually involves white sand beaches, a hammock, a cocktail and a good book – oh, and the sea breeze is nice too!

The “secret sauce” that makes me who I am …
Birkenstocks. You can tell a lot about a person by the shoes they wear.

My name is Alesha and I work for Mozy

Continuing with our series on introducing you to some of our talented team members who directly contribute to the success of Mozy.  This month, we’d like to showcase one of our supporting pillars  – Alesha Healey.  Alesha ensures that all the gears that make Mozy work are oiled and everyone gets what they need, as one of the Administrative Assistants, Alesha is one of the most approachable and accommodating people at Mozy.  She is always willing to help and her sense of humor makes her an incredible asset.

My name is Alesha and I work for Mozy

I define my workspace as …
A cluster truck of crap! (can I say that on this blog?!!) I would like to have less in my workspace but every time I get rid of something, two other items pop up to take its place. I’ve stopped trying.

A device I can’t live without …jack
I love my iPad and would marry it if I could!

When I arrive at work, I typically start off by …
To help me with my job, I have access to about 27 different programs and once I’ve logged into them and filled up my water bottle, I get to work.

My work routine is …
I have a running task list that I work from (thank you iPad!) It never ends, which is a good thing. I would rather be busy than not.

I do/do not listen to music at work and it helps me work better because …
It depends on what I am working on… Expense reports? Yes! They can be mind-numbing and the music helps me keep my sanity. Email or scheduling? No! Frankly, I am just not that talented.

The best advice I can give a recent college graduate looking to do what I do is …
Make sure that you like what you do and have a little fun every day.

Outside of work, I am passionate about …
Cooking and baking, I enjoy finding and creating new recipes. There is nothing more satisfying than preparing something with my own two hands knowing that it might just bring a little joy to the peeps I love.
Author’s note: I knew there was a reason I liked Alesha – she and I share the same passion for cooking and baking…great minds!

My eating habits are …
Sporadic at best, I either eat way too much or nothing at all. Very healthy, I know. ☺ I do love ice cream!!!

If I could be someone for a day – I would be …
Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City. She barely has to work but somehow always has the money to get drunk with her friends and buy fabulous shoes!
Author’s note: another reason why I like Alesha…what’s not to love about Carrie Bradshaw??!!

The “secret sauce” that makes me who I am …
I am crazy clumsy. I fall down and/or get hurt way more than any adult should. I choose to just laugh, be happy and live in the moment. Even if that moment is painful… ☺
Author’s note: Alesha’s modesty is evident in her response, as she never addresses that fact that without her Mozy would be between a rock and a hard place since she keeps everyone on track.

My name is Ben and I work for Mozy

Welcome back to another edition of “My name is…” blog series. This month we’d like you to meet Ben Nettesheim, our Senior Manager of eCommerce. Ben is the glue that ensures that all the different online tentacles that Mozy has out there are positioned for our benefit. Do our SEO words leverage online marketing campaigns? Do all of our website(s) convey the right message, the way they should? Do our online efforts make us even more stellar? Simply put, Ben is our eCommerce Yoda.

My name is Ben and I work for Mozy

I define my workspace as …
The website!

A device I can’t live without …
My Google Nexus phone, Hydro 5 Razor, and Old Spice Pure Sport deodorant.

When I arrive at work, I typically start off by …
Logging into my web dashboards. Who came to the website? Who purchased? Who left comments?

My work routine is …
Analyze, ask questions, and adjust the experience. Rinse and repeat.

I do/do not listen to music at work and it helps me work better because …
I do! A Pandora quick mix is where I typically live. A variety of all sorts of music keep me going.

The best advice I can give a recent college graduate looking to do what I do is …
Get involved. Start your own blog or website. Implement some tracking for free like Google Analytics. Try making some cash off it for fun.

Outside of work, I am passionate about …
Wisconsin sports, Real Salt Lake, and the US National and Brazilian National Soccer teams. I also love being crazy w/ my young kids, camping in the beautiful Utah National Parks, and geeking out to tech news.
Author’s note: I wonder if Ben left off “Walking Dead” from his list intentionally?? Most of the Marketing team are die hard fans and other than sports talk – “Walking Dead” is high on the list!

My eating habits are …
I’m in charge of Sunday dinner in our family, so I have a lot of fun w/ that. Some of the fan favorites have been dubbed “Bensagna, Benoganoff, and “Man Roast.”

If I could be someone for a day – I would be …
Easy Peazy. Captain America. Give me an Adamantium shield and super human speed and strength, and I’m good to go!
Author’s note: Captain America…yeah…duh ☺ What Ben left out is that his family also dresses up for movie premières – I believe he was Snake Eyes for the G.I. Joe premiere. Ben can be counted on for dressing up for Halloween.

The “secret sauce” that makes me who I am …
My wife and five kids. Yeah… a lotta sauce.

My name is Zac and I work for Mozy

Welcome back to our “My name is … and I work for Mozy” blog series. We started this series about six months ago in an effort to showcase some of the incredible talent that is housed under the Mozy umbrella. We’ve attempted to expand across all our functional areas to show you that Mozy has successfully managed to find the best-of-the-best in talent. And I, for one, am excited to have the opportunity to work with incredible people, day in and day out.

This month, we’d like you to meet Zac Paynter. Zac is one of our Financial Analysts and is part of the Finance Team at Mozy. He handles company headcount, analysis and budgeting for customer support, general/administrative and Research & Development. In addition, he also works on forecasting, cost analysis, monthly close procedures, and financial reporting. As you can see there is a lot that Zac does and we are grateful he found a few minutes to help us with this blog series. The world really needed to know about Zac…and no, you can’t have him!

My name is Zac and I work at Mozy

I define my workspace as …
My home away from home…after all, I spend most of my day here with people that are fun to be around. You could also call it my science lab where financial genius is born.

A device I can’t live without …
A basketball. Nobody said it had to be an electronic device…

When I arrive at work, I typically start off by …
Downing my protein drink, filling my water bottle, answering emails, and taking a deep breath as I prepare for another busy day.

My work routine is …
Changing day by day, but the same month to month. A week of closing the books, a week of reporting, a week of forecasting, and a week of catching up on everything else.

I do/do not listen to music at work and it helps me work better because …
It helps me “get into the zone.” Sometimes it’s nice to shut out any outside distractions coming from extremely loud co-workers and turn up the productivity while enjoying movie scores from The Dark Knight, Inception, Gladiator, Transformers, Sherlock Holmes, and Dirty Dancing….wait… scratch that last one.
Author’s note: Zac is most likely referring to the Marketing team when he refers to “extremely loud co-workers” – he has the unfortunate luck of having been assigned to a cubicle right by us. I will, however, say that he can dish it as well as he can take it and we never get tired of giving him a hard time!

The best advice I can give a recent college graduate looking to do what I do is …
Prepare for the worst and expect the best. Finance is very demanding but also extremely rewarding. On one hand, you come to know the business very well while on the other hand; you have constant deadlines that tend to raise stress levels. Keep that Ibuprofen close by. ☺

Outside of work, I am passionate about …
Family, friends, mountain biking, hiking, camping, pretty much every sport that doesn’t involve a racquet. I’m currently training for a half-marathon, the Wasatch Back Ragnar Relay and the Spartan Beast this summer.

My eating habits are …
Sporadic to say the least – green smoothies, brown rice, and veggies one day to pizza and chicken wings the next. I’m a bit of a social eater.

If I could be someone for a day – I would be …
Blake Griffin. Dude can jump! I’ve always wondered what it’s like up there. Plus those Kia commercials he’s in make me laugh pretty hard!

The “secret sauce” that makes me who I am …
Positive attitude, work ethic, spontaneity, sense of humor, and desire to learn.

My name is James and I work for Mozy

We’ve had so much fun introducing our team members to you that this month we’ve chosen someone who has been with Mozy for quite a few years. His tenure with the company has allowed him unique insight to the change that Mozy has gone through – both as a company and the culture within the company. Allow me to introduce you to James Jolley. James oversees our Affiliate and SEO (Search Engine Optimization) programs. He provides support for our Affiliates and ensures they are well taken care of and the partnerships remain positive. As the SEO Manager, James also provides incredible insight and direction for where we strategically place ourselves online.

My name is James and I work for Mozy

I define my workspace as …

After five years with the company you would think I would have dolled up my cubicle but I haven’t. Therefore, I would define my workspace as a place where my computer and I reside for a few hours a day – it’s not much more than that.

A device I can’t live without …jack
The device that provides the world with Mountain Dew.
Author’s note: I can safely say that James has tried every single Mountain Dew product or spin-off, including Mtn. Dew lip balm. Saying that he loves Mtn. Dew is an understatement.

When I arrive at work, I typically start off by …
Answering emails and getting caught up on relevant marketing blogs.

My work routine is …
Get caught up on emails. Then depending on the day I’ll work on one of our five Affiliate programs or our sites for SEO efforts.

I do/do not listen to music at work and it helps me work better because …
It’s hard for me to focus in a cubicle environment where you can hear every conversation and as a result, I do listen to music. Noise cancelling headphones playing Chopin or Dave Matthews Band and I’m set for the day!

The best advice I can give a recent college graduate looking to do what I do is …
Don’t get frustrated because most of what you end up doing won’t be covered in college. Take one day at a time and build a solid foundation. Allow yourself at least one hour a day at work to increase your knowledge base.

Outside of work, I am passionate about …
I’ve recently become an avid road cyclist. I’m fortunate (as well as my coworkers) that Mozy has showers so that I can ride into work during the summer. I also really like learning about U.S. history – from the beginnings of Plymouth and Jamestown to the end of WWII.

My eating habits are …
…getting better. I’m trying to eat out less and making healthier choices besides the annual gorge on Girl Scout cookies.

If I could be someone for a day – I would be …
Curator/Director for Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. I spent a whole day (the guard had to kick me out) at that museum and was only able to get through two of the three floors. Going behind the scenes to see what they have but don’t show would be amazing.

The “secret sauce” that makes me who I am …
I guess would be my ability to keep cool in stressful situations. I also try to learn something about everything so that I don’t have to avoid any conversation where I don’t have anything in common with the other person.

My name is Todd and I work for Mozy

In the past few months, we’ve introduced you to some of our amazing team members who dedicate their skills and talents that make Mozy an amazing company. This month we would like to introduce you to Todd Esplin, one of our very talented product managers. Todd is based out of Pleasant Grove, Utah offices and has provided tremendous insight and direction to making our competitive offerings world-class.

My name is Todd and I work at Mozy

I define my workspace as …
Doing product strategy, management, and development to build competitive products, roadmaps and features.

A device I can’t live without …
iPhone (yes, still) but a whiteboard is a close second.

When I arrive at work, I typically start off by …
Meeting with a project team or business team to report out on active initiatives or plan new ones.

My work routine is …
Active. We’ve adopted an agile process for getting things done. So, at the beginning of each week I write down on 3×5 cards what I want to get done for the week, prioritize them and decide how long each will take to get done. Then, each day I review the list with my team and move the cards through their progression. I leave additional time for routine things like email and meetings. During the day, I spend a lot of time writing down ideas about our products and features and then talking to others about the ideas.

I do/do not listen to music at work and it helps me work better because …
I listen to music when I need to write and really concentrate. . We were work in an open environment and I get easily distracted by interesting conversations and . . . well, birds flying past my window, so music helps me block out many distractions. I usually listen to classical music while I’m writing – it also prevents me from singing out loud which apparently my colleagues find harmful (I think they are just jealous).

The best advice I can give a recent college graduate looking to do what I do is …
Get a good technical education, couple that with a business education and top it off with compassion for those who buy and use your products. Customers may not always be able to tell you what they want but they can definitely tell you when they don’t like what you give them and you need to listen, ask good questions, and use their feedback to make the product better.

Outside of work, I am passionate about …

  • My family. I have a great wife and four cool kids. We are in the mix of it all right now – high school, middle school, and elementary. Boys, girls, a dog, and a bearded dragon. Music lessons, sports teams, family vacations. It’s not always easy but it’s awesome. My wife and I love to go to movies and find great places to eat.
  • Learning. I read a lot whenever possible through all types of tools (real books, digital books, magazines, web). Current topics include: architecture, sports, psychology, mysteries, and adventure fantasies. I love reading books to my kids.
  • Sports. I’ve run a couple of marathons and relay races. I love to play golf with my dad, brothers, and kids.

My eating habits are …
Quirky. Because of my awesome body, I get to eat six times a day in order to keep things, um … right. I love breakfast (lots of fiber) and occasionally some protein. I like most types of food with a heavier emphasis on Mexican, Thai, and Italian. Oh yes, I do love a good hamburger too.

If I could be someone for a day – I would be …
A grand prix driver. While there are many people and professions to choose from, but a professional driver would be a rush. I love cars, speed, and endurance and it would be so fun to feel the power and adrenaline of driving fast and technically maneuvering around a track.

The “secret sauce” that makes me who I am …
Hmmm . . . I guess it’s that I really want people to be happy and fulfilled. If they are buying something from me, then I want them to love it and get value out of it. If I’m going to lunch with someone, I want them to enjoy themselves. If I’m running a project, then I want the team to feel like they are engaged – developing themselves and improving and having fun.

This isn’t Todd’s first appearance on the Mozy blog. In fact, you can see him in action in this post about MozyEnterprise.
