To celebrate the release of Mozy 2.0 for Windows, we’re having a trivia contest! For the next week, we’ll be asking a series of trivia questions based on the theme of “All things 2.0.” We’ve gotten creative with our trivia, so get ready for some craziness! Here’s how it’ll work:

  • The contest starts today, May 18, at noon MST. After that, we’ll be asking one question an hour via our Twitter account, from 10 AM MST to 4 PM MST every day for a week. (If you don’t have a Twitter account, you can sign up for one here.)
  • The first person to tweet to @mozy with the correct answer(s) to our question will receive 5 points. The second person to guess the correct answer will get 1 point.
  • Answers must be tagged with the hashtag #mozy2 to be valid.
  • The contest will run for one week, so it ends on May 24 at 11:59 PM MST.
  • At that time, we’ll tally up the scores and the people with the top 3 point totals will get a 1TB external hard drive to use with Mozy’s new 2xProtect as well as a free year of Mozy!

Feel free to post questions in the comments. Good luck, and be safe!

UPDATE: We’ll now be posting trivia questions outside of the 10-4 MST window so that everyone can participate. Just look for posts with the #mozy2 tag.

UPDATE: The leaderboard is live! We’ll also be throwing some schwag out for random participants, so even if you don’t win the points competition, you could still pick up some awesome Mozy stuff!

Mozy and Windows 7

If you’re into computers, (and if you’re reading this, we’re willing to bet that you are) this is a pretty exciting week. We saw the release of some new Apple hardware earlier in the week, and Microsoft is releasing Windows 7 this week as well. With all this newness, we feel it’s important to remind you that you need to protect all that newness.

That’s why we recommend getting Mozy for your new stuff (be it Windows or Apple). After all, we’ve done thorough testing on both Snow Leopard and Windows 7 and Mozy works well on both. Just use the coupon code SAVE10 to get 10% off any new subscription to a 1- or 2- year MozyHome Unlimited plan! And if you’re upgrading to Windows 7 this week, remember to be safe and back up first!

Client Release: Windows 1.14

We are once again proud to announce another Mozy Windows client release. Here are a few highlights from this latest release:

  • Added support for EFS encrypted files – The client now supports backing up only the portions of the files that have changed for EFS encrypted files, rather than the entire file.
  • Improved the speed of launching configuration – When you launch the configuration utility, it now displays much faster than before.
  • Added welcome tab in the client configuration – The client configuration window now has a Welcome tab that displays information about how Mozy works, how to select files for backup, and how to perform a restore.
  • Added tooltips to the tabs in client configuration – Added pop-up text that displays when a mouse is hovered over a tab (tooltips) in the client Configuration window. The tooltips explain the tasks that can be completed on each tab of the Configuration window.
  • Enhanced locked file support – The client now uses Windows Volume Shadow Services (VSS) for all files to prevent locking. This allows files to be used by other applications while they are being backed up.
  • Improved the password change flow – Now when you change your password on the Mozy Web site, you are automatically asked to enter your new password when a backup occurs or when you launch the Configuration window.
  • Other compatibility and performance improvements

Client Release: Windows 1.12

As part of our relentless effort to deliver the best online backup service in the world, we are proud to announce the 1.12 release of the Mozy Windows client. Here’s a couple of highlights from this latest release:

  • We’ve added a search box to the restore tab within the client that lets you search for specific files within your backup. Previously, you could only browse for files and had to know where on their computer it was located, when it was backed up, or in which backup set it was included. You can now search for files on the restore tab in the client.
  • We’ve differentiated backup sets (i.e. all music files) and file system folders (i.e. the “my music” folder) under the restore tab. We had received some feedback from our customers that the visual display in the restore tab made it difficult to distinguish between file system folders and backup sets. Now, this new overlay icon on the backup set folder icon helps to differentiate it from the file system folders.
  • We have added the ability to re-associate a new computer. In the event of disaster or data loss, you can use Mozy to easily restore your backup files to another computer. You can also migrate your backup files from one computer to another, as well as transfer files from an old computer to a new computer. You can find additional information about replacing a computer here.
